For the fickle minded artwork lovers like myself, picture ledges are a great alternative to a gallery wall. Art can be swapped out on a whim, without the hassle of filling nail holes or hammering new hooks into the wall, basically the lazy girls way out! I was so adamant on getting picture ledges up in our flat I traveled half the country to pick ours up – believe me, these shelves are not great train companions!
I have tried a number of different layouts and photos on our ledge until I finally found the style I was happy with…for now so thought I would share a couple of tips for styling your own!
To Theme Or Not To Theme?
The decision of whether to go all black and white or only select vintage photos or posters for your ledge should be completely your own, chances are when pulling together artwork and photographs that flow you will end up with some kind of theme anyway! Be considerate of your interiors and go for photos that work with the style you are looking to create.
When laying out your frames always start with the largest as that will be the image that grounds the selection, the one you can layer upon. Once you have your grounding the rest should follow suit, but the best thing about picture ledges is that if at first the layout doesn’t work, a quick shuffle around will sort it out.
Everything is better when it is (semi) symmetric, even the most disorderly of picture shelves look intentionally styled when there is a bit of well thought out symmetry. That is not to say you have to make sure everything is perfectly put together and frames all line up like in exact size order but a little planning never hurt anyone!
A Picture Ledge Is Not Just For Pictures
The more crap you can fit on your ledge the better; candles, plants, figurines, more plants – whatever works. These objects can be switched at the flick of the hand so don’t worry if you aren’t sure about them.
Find What Works
As I’ve mentioned about 10 times in this post already, picture ledges can be so easily restyled that you don’t need to worry about how it looks permanently, just make sure it shows your personality and you are happy (for now!).
