I don’t agree with sticking to home trends, I like to think of a home as an extension of its inhabitants, so I’m not sure why I am sat here typing out my 2016 trend predictions. Unlike fashion trends which change with the season, interior design styles move in more of a yearly cycle, after all it’s easier to buy a new shirt than remodel your home.
South American Vibes
Move over Scandinavia, this year we are all going to be lusting over the vibrant handmade fabrics and finishes of South America. We have recently seen parts of the South American culture enter our homes in the forms intricately patterned tiles, cacti and succulents but I’m predicting this year we will delve a step further into native and handwoven fabrics and accessories. The complexity and work that has gone into each cushion or throw is inspiring and often means that each piece is unique, simplicity is so 2015. If you need any inspiration on this trend, California based Amber Interiors are killing it, you can check out their blog here.
One of my favorite trend for 2016 is combining contrasting prints, the louder, bolder and more obnoxious the better. The idea is to recreate that crazy cat lady home but in a more refined way; layering a faded persian rug against a more vibrant leopard print, or piling cushion upon cushion in quirky 70’s florals. This trend works best in neutral spaces, think light timber floorboards, white walls and bright, bold accessories.
Last year saw those of us who had that matchy matchy mentality lust over copper accessories but resist indulging because however cute they were, we did not want copper salad servers cosying up to our stainless steel knives in the cutlery drawer! This year however we are going to be embracing contrasting tones of metal, think a bathroom basin with the hot tap in stainless steel and the cold in brass, it is going to look amazing, unfinished and just generally eccentric. So if there was ever a time to invest in that random copper accessory it is now.
I’m predicting 2016 will be the year we all move our focus up towards the ceilings; tin tiles, wallpaper or just painted ceilings, its time to experiment. This trend is not for the faint hearted, I mentioned it to Tom and he nearly choked on his cup f tea, so don’t expect to see any painted ceilings around here.
As I mentioned there is never a need to stick soley to trends, if you want to paint your living room barbie pink then do it, regardless of whether it is Pantone’s colour of the year.
So you’ve heard my 2016 predictions, do you have any interior predictions?
